What's it like to be an Applications Analyst?
An Applications Analyst is a technical professional who designs, tests and maintains software applications in various industries. Common responsibilities include investigating and diagnosing application faults, making recommendations for enhancements or updates, and troubleshooting complicated setups. Applications Analysts also consult with users to identify their software needs within business processes, project planning, or data interfaces, and build or tailor software applications to meet these requirements. They often work in sectors where IT is central, such as finance, healthcare and technology. Applications Analyst roles are collaborative, often involving interactions with developers, system administrators and end-users.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing user requirements and specifications for new applications or modifications to existing applications.
- Developing, testing, and implementing application modifications and enhancements to meet these requirements.
- Performing troubleshooting to diagnose and resolve application issues, which may include coding or system configuration adjustments.
- Creating and maintaining system documentation, including procedural and training materials.
- Investigating, evaluating and recommending new technologies or software to enhance application performance and efficiency.
- Liaising with application vendors for support and issue resolution.
- Ensuring application integrity through regular monitoring and maintenance.
How to become an Applications Analyst
A bachelor degree is typically required for the role of Applications Analyst. Certifications are an advantage.
- Earn a bachelor degree in computer science, information technology, or related field.
- Consider getting industry certifications such as the CompTIA A+, Microsoft Fundamentals, or the AWS Cloud Practitioner designation.
- Gain experience through internships or on-the-job training.
