What is AI (artificial intelligence) and does it pose a threat to our jobs?

Since the release in November 2022 of OpenAI’s ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), the AI chatbot has been used to write student essays, cover letters for job applications, and even write academic articles. It mimics human writing so well that there have been reports of some companies letting go of workers and relying on chatbots for their writing requirements.

This has led many to fear that they will lose their jobs to AI. But is this indeed the case?

What is AI?

AI is a form of intelligence that is used by machines to simulate human learning and thinking. It is used to automate simple tasks and provide solutions to difficult and complex problems in a wide range of industries.

AI combines elements of statistics, mathematics, computer engineering, and digital logic. By using large datasets and machine learning algorithms, AI can analyze enormous amounts of data and make simple decisions quickly without human intervention.

ChatGPT, currently the most well-known of such AI applications, describes itself as a “conversational AI technology designed to simulate conversations with human-like intelligence. Chat GPT-based applications can understand natural language, answer questions, and make conversation with a human-like level of intimacy.”

Examples of AI Technology

AI is used in a variety of industries, from finance to healthcare. It is being used to speed up processes, optimize operations, and improve customer service.

Financial institutions use AI to get insights into customer behavior, identify patterns to predict events, and automate loan decisions. In the healthcare industry, it is used to diagnose diseases quicker and more accurately, reduce medical errors, and improve the overall quality of care. AI is also being used to automate tasks in the manufacturing industry, such as production scheduling and inventory tracking.

Here a few examples of AI technology and how they are used:

Machine learning

Machine learning is a subset of AI that enables computers to learn from data, identify patterns, and make decisions without being explicitly programmed. It utilizes algorithms to process large amounts of data and adjust itself when exposed to new data.

Natural language processing

Natural language processing (NLP) is a technology that enables machines to understand and generate human language. This technology can be used to translate text, identify key words to extract relevant information, and respond to user queries.

Computer vision

Computer vision is a form of AI that enables machines to recognize and classify visual data. This technology is used in a variety of ways, including image recognition, facial recognition, and autonomous navigation.

Pros and Cons of AI

There are quite a few benefits to using AI in businesses. Some of these are:

Automating tedious and/or repetitive tasks

AI can be used to automate and speed up mundane tasks, freeing up employees to work on more important or creative tasks.

Analyzing data

AI can be used to quickly scan through large amounts of data to find relevant patterns and insights that the business can use to increase its efficiency and enhance its performance.

Increasing accuracy and speed of decisions

AI technologies can be used to make decisions faster and with greater accuracy than human ones, reducing the chance of human error and increasing the ability of businesses to respond quickly.

Enhancing customer service

AI technologies can be used to personalize customer service experiences, providing faster and more accurate service that can lead to better customer satisfaction and loyalty over time.

However, there are disadvantages to using AI too, such as:

Tendency of AI to generate misinformation

At the present stage of AI development, many users have found errors in the content chatbots generate. These range from errors of fact, to basic math and coding mistakes. This poses a risk to businesses using AI output without it first being checked by a human.

Security/privacy threats

AI technologies may pose a risk to the security and privacy of a business’s data and systems.

Cost

AI technologies can be costly to implement and maintain, although this cost is usually outweighed by the increased efficiency and performance gains made by the technology.

Legal considerations

AI technology may face legal considerations that businesses need to be aware of before implementing them. For example, in some countries it may be illegal to use certain algorithms to make decisions that can have a big impact on people’s lives.

Examples of Jobs That May Be Affected by AI

AI has the potential to disrupt many different types of jobs. For instance, jobs that require manual, repetitive tasks, such as customer service and manufacturing, are more likely to be replaced by AI. Many white-collar jobs, such as financial advisors and lawyers, may be impacted by AI in the future.

Here are examples of jobs that may be affected by AI:

Telemarketer

AI-driven bots can be used to do telemarketing and have been found to be more effective than human operators.

Customer service representative

Chatbots are being increasingly employed to provide customer service. By providing automated responses, they free up customer service reps to focus on more complex issues.

Content writers

Automation caused by AI can reduce the need for content writers. Initially, AI-driven software can be used to generate basic text content and later, more sophisticated AI can be used to produce more complex pieces requiring minimal human involvement.

Librarian

AI-supported library management systems are being implemented to take on the tasks that would typically be done by a librarian, such as cataloging and circulation.

Transcriptionist

Automated speech recognition technologies are being implemented to replace human transcriptionists.

Bookkeeper

Accounting and bookkeeping tasks are being slowly taken over by automated systems and AI-driven software.

Factory workers

Automation, combined with the use of AI-driven robots, can completely replace manual labor in some factory settings.

Financial analyst

Algorithms used to analyze and predict trends in stock prices and other financial indicators. Companies are using AI-driven automation to perform financial analysis, eliminating the need for an accountant to manually prepare and review tax returns.

Data entry clerk

With the introduction of automated and intelligent data entry systems, more companies are eliminating the need for humans in this position and turning to AI to quickly and accurately enter data.

How to Not Lose Your Job to a Chatbot

The use of AI is rapidly increasing in many industries, and it is important to be aware of the potential implications of this technology. To prepare for the future, it is important to continuously update your skills and stay ahead of the curve.

Here are some things to remember:

Stay updated on technology

Continuously update yourself on the latest technology developments, so you can stay ahead of the curve and not be blindsided by advances in artificial intelligence and automation. By keeping up with the times and learning new skills, professionals can stay ahead in the race and be better prepared for the future of work.

Embrace adaptability

Be prepared to learn new skills and concepts, and remain open to opportunities. Stay agile. Develop a versatile skill set that can be applied to many different areas.

Develop soft skills

While AI continues to become increasingly adept at executing tasks, it is unable to replicate the invaluable human traits of empathy, collaboration, and relationship-building.Also read: All You Need to Know About Transferable Skills

Automate your own tasks

Learn to utilize automation in your own endeavors to become more efficient and increase productivity. For instance, writers may consider using ChatGPT to kickstart an article for them.

Learn new skills

Dedicate time to actively improve and learn new skills (upskilling), particularly those which will be in higher demand for human workers.

Build strong relationships

By having strong relationships with colleagues and managers, you will be able to show what other skills and qualities you bring to the job that a machine cannot affect. This may make you less likely to be replaced by an AI, as machines are not typically seen as having the same skills and qualities as a human.

Do We Really Risk Losing Our Jobs to AI?

While AI is expected to take over certain jobs, it has both pros and cons. Overall, many jobs still require human judgment to avoid error and bias. Much of AI output at present still needs to be edited and checked by a human before use. We can think of chatbots as productivity enhancing tools that can help us do our jobs better and faster, rather than replacing humans completely in many jobs.

With the right knowledge and skillset, you won’t lose your job to a chatbot. It’s important to determine for yourself how you can upskill and future-proof yourself, and start working on it now.
