Now you may think that integrating music into your routine is unnecessary, but several studies have shown songs can help with productivity and memory retention. MAV Music founder Michael Vettraino shares that when offices play music, their team productivity skyrocketed.

Need more convincing? Here are some more reasons why music is essential for working.

Music for work concentration

Auditory learners can relate to this. Music has been around for centuries as a transformative art and creative outlet for people. Some of the legends who passed before us have left legacies in musical pieces, operas, and songs. But if you are neither singer nor a songwriter, music can leave a positive effect even as a mere listener. How? Let us count the ways.

1. Music is an escape.

Our lives can become routinary. For those who have a 9 to 5 job, a schedule has already been set in place. Commute or walk to work, time in, hustle and grind for a set number of hours, time out, and head back home. Sometimes a break in the routine comes through when you have to work beyond the allotted number of hours for some days.

While we cannot be thrill-seeking everyday, music can provide that escape from our “humdrum” lives. If we are looking to add something new to our routine without breaking the bank or going somewhere else, count on music as that much needed airline ticket away.

2. Familiar rhythms can help soothe anxiety

When facing a daunting project, you could get riled up from the stress of thinking about or doing it. If you seem fazed by the amount of tasks that lie ahead, you can turn to your favorite playlist to soothe you or get your head back in the game.

It may not be able to add anything impactful to your project itself, but as Maria Von Trapp liked to say, “When something bugs me or if I’m feeling unhappy, I just think of nice things.” In this case, she sings about it, and you should too.

3. Songs can influence certain energies

There is a reason why songs can be dubbed as motivational. In fact, several factors can account for that. It could be in the lyrics, in the beat, the melody, and the energy in which it was sung. Some songs can lift you up, match your sadness during a breakup, or can push you to hit that extra step at the gym.

Depending on your goal or your intention, you can seek help from music as the perfect partner to achieve whatever you need to achieve.

So, you may ask – what playlists really fit a mood? Another study shows that you must be able to play the right music. Aside from beats-heavy power anthems, you can also venture into the ambient and classical music genres if you need an extra boost of focus.

So with that said, we explore playlists that are fit for any kind of music enthusiast.

What are work-appropriate songs?

Whether it be building a playlist from scratch or needing a simple upgrade, we share some of the songs that are an immediate need to play and have on loop. Not only are they the pushy friends you need, they can help you soar high and get that gold – whatever it may be.

1. MONEY, LISA

Dollar bills, dollar bills / Watch it falling for me, I love the way that feels

Yes we are called to save, but there are some professionals that actually have this on repeat to manifest cash in the bank. Financial stability can be a purpose too, and Blackpink’s Lisa shares the same sentiment. You may have heard this song all over the airwaves (and the online wave too!). Its premise is as simple as it is catchy.

2. “Another Day of Sun,” La La Land

“I'm reaching for the heights / And chasing all the lights that shine”

Broadway enthusiasts know this to be true. Musicals have a hold on certain people, and its ability to break the mold in between conversations work wonders for film and stage. Damien Chazelle’s musical dramedy is no exception, and this movie has a Best Picture Oscar to its name for a reason.

The film tells the story of two aspiring creatives who want to make it big in Hollywood, and it opens with this general consensus, jazz piano a peppy beat, and trumpets included.

It details the rise and fall of making it to stardom, with a key lyric that says, “When they let you down, get up off the ground, morning rolls around – it’s another day of sun.” There are good and bad days at work, and it echoes this sentiment when the latter shows up.

3. “What?” by SB19

Maniwala, darating ang mga biyaya / Higit pa sa lahat-lahat ng nawala” (Believe and the blessings will come, more than what was lost then)

Aside from the accompanying show-stopper of a music video, this Filipino boyband rose to local and international stardom fast with their performances. The song “What?” in particular is a perfect blend of Pinoy pride and the motivational push you need to get things done.

When interviewed about the meaning of the song, the group leader Pablo shares that it is about individuality – knowing and accepting who you are.

So if you feel like you need a little pick-me-up at work, you can listen to this song to remind you of how great you are.

4. “ON,” BTS

“Can't hold me down 'cause you know I'm a fighter”

This group does not need further introduction. The name BTS falls easily on the lips of the world, and their songs no less.

“ON” talks about the group’s struggle with misanthropes, the ones who hate on their success. If you encountered any conflict at work – a jealous officemate, an overzealous co-worker, and such – take some of their lyrics to heart. There may not be a lot of English lyrics, but know that the beat and the energy resonate anyway.

5. “BREAK MY SOUL,” Beyonce

If you don't seek it, you won't see it

Catchy 90s dance jam sample aside, this is one Beyonce song that should be on repeat (along with the rest of her discography, of course). She sings about her being free from the chains that used to hold her back, that despite being imprisoned, nothing and no one can break her soul.

Just like Queen Bey, you will not let anyone unworthy through your boundaries, right? Take a page off the book of Yonce. Leave your spirit free and wild, just like the work life balance you deserve

More than words: Songs that keep you hyperfocused

Sometimes, words do not need to come for you to stay on track. Most professionals credit ambient and classical music for their success. So if you wish to do away with heavy productions but need something to fill your ears, we suggest doing a deep dive into these songs.

1. The sounds of nature

Here is where we can emphasize music as an actual escape. The rise of ambient noise can be credited to this being an initial solution for people with tinnitus. These kinds of sounds were used as a distraction for patients who needed to get away from the high pitches of the ailment. But now, most professionals (and students!) utilize ambient nature sounds to concentrate and create a sense of peace in the workplace.

Whether it be imagining yourself watching the rain by the windowsill or vicariously sinking your toes on wet soil in the rainforest, these ambient noises are what you need to calm racing hearts or stress.

2. Classical music pieces

There is a reason why these songs stood the test of time. If you are familiar with the Baby Mozart series, there is a reason behind its success. Several studies have shown that professionals who listen to classical music can increase productivity. It could be credited to two factors, namely the absence of lyrics which can distract more than impact, and the unpredictable rise and fall of the melodies and notes.

Finding out the mix of songs that work for you can ultimately help you reach your goals, and provide a sense of respite from the daily grind. Here is hoping you can find your calm middle. Do not forget to sing your heart out!
