Senior Mainframe Developer (COBOL, DB2, JCL | CICS, VSAM)

About the role

Cognizant Technology Solutions Philippines Inc. is seeking a Senior Mainframe Developer to join our growing technology team. This is a full-time position that offers an exciting opportunity to leverage your extensive mainframe expertise in a dynamic, innovative environment. As a Senior Mainframe Developer, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and maintaining mission-critical mainframe applications that support our enterprise clients. This position is integral to our continued success in delivering robust, scalable solutions in the mainframe technology space.

Key responsibilities

1. Design and develop mainframe applications using COBOL, ensuring adherence to best practices and coding standards

2. Develop and optimise DB2 database solutions, including complex queries, stored procedures, and database design

3. Write and maintain JCL scripts to automate batch processing and system operations

4. Work with CICS to develop and maintain online transaction processing applications

5. Design and implement VSAM file structures and manage data access patterns

6. Conduct code reviews and provide technical guidance to junior developers and development teams

7. Collaborate with business analysts and stakeholders to translate requirements into technical specifications

8. Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex production issues in a timely manner

9. Participate in system performance tuning and optimization initiatives

10. Document technical designs, solutions, and system configurations comprehensively

What we're looking for

1. 8+ years of professional experience as a mainframe developer with demonstrated expertise in COBOL programming

2. Advanced proficiency in DB2, including database design, SQL optimisation, and performance tuning

3. Strong experience with JCL scripting and batch job scheduling

4. Solid understanding of CICS architecture and online transaction processing systems

5. Hands-on experience with VSAM file management and data access methodologies

6. Proven experience in mainframe systems analysis and troubleshooting

7. Knowledge of mainframe security, system administration, and compliance requirements

8. Excellent problem-solving capabilities and analytical mindset

9. Strong communication and team collaboration skills

10. Ability to mentor junior developers and contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives

11. Familiarity with modern development practices and version control systems is advantageous

12. Understanding of integration between mainframe and distributed systems is preferred
