ROLE OF EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANTS

Educational Assistant teachers should be involved in actual teaching of either small groups or the whole class. Being part of the grade level team, the Educational Assistant is expected to actively participate in planning and evaluating the classroom / grade level programme. They are expected to attend meetings. As active members of the team, they are guided by the expectations of other teacher roles.  

 

To actively support the mission, values and beliefs of the school, it's curriculum, goals and policies:

  • To be an active learner, taking part in professional development offered by the school and applying the learning into the classroom environment. 
  • To proactively build supportive relationships with other members of the school community, including colleagues, parents etc. 
  • To actively support, collaborate and contribute to the teaching teams activities and meetings, both within the IB programs and across the IB programs. 
  • In order to promote a full understanding of the curriculum to look for opportunities to grow an understanding of the PYP/MYP curriculum especially for the grade level one is assigned to.
  • To carry out any reasonable general administrative tasks, not covered in this description, as requested by the Head of School or Programme Coordinator.
  • To actively act as a positive role model and ambassador for the school in the community. 
  • To be committed to the safeguarding of children. 
  • To help formulate, implement and support any policies decided on by the partnership of the Board of Trustees, Head of School, staff and parent community.


 

Responsibilities specific to teaching and learning:

  • To be an active learner, take part in learning and applying a wide variety of teaching strategies using the latest research to ensure that the learning environment is inclusive and meets the needs of all students in the class. 
  • To demonstrate coachability in order to support the delivery of a balanced curriculum, covering all Key Learning Areas and skills, demonstrating growing levels of competence in all strands of the Beacon School’s PYP and MYP Curriculum.
  • To encourage the highest standards of achievement, through programmes which enable students to realize their full potential as individuals, and to develop the values needed to become good citizens.
  • To regularly evaluate one’s own teaching methods and approaches in order to maximize the development of knowledge, understanding and skills needed to compete successfully in the modern ever - changing world.
  • To provide a safe, positive and stimulating learning environment for all students.
  • To actively participate in the corporate life of the school through attendance at faculty meetings, regular communication with parents, and supporting colleagues and administration.
  • Assists the teacher with planning and/or organizing instructional activities. Cooperates in developing instructional procedures for the classroom.
  • Assists the teacher in the preparation of instructional materials. 
  • Is aware of the goals and objectives of the supervising teacher.
  • Provides instructional support to students in one on one setting successfully. 
  • Successfully provides instructional support to students in whole group setting. 
  • Shows awareness of student performance/achievement/issues and reports these to the homeroom teacher.
  • Works with the teacher in managing student behavior and reports difficulties as appropriate.
  • Assists the teacher in the assessment process by helping collect and compile student work.
  • Displays student work in a timely manner.
  • Supervises students as they move from one area of the school to another, consistently implementing school-wide essential agreements and ensuring student safety.
  • Successfully participates in professional development opportunities offered by the school. Seeks out opportunities to gain professional knowledge.
  • Provides clerical/administrative support e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, coordinating field trips, etc.  following established procedures consistently.
  • Accompanies teachers and students on field trips as required and takes responsibility for a group under the supervision of the homeroom teacher.
  • Accepts additional responsibilities in the area of instructional assistance.

 

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of BS Education related courses
  • Preferably Licensed Professional Teachers
  • With 1 to 3 years of teaching experience in an International Baccalaureate (IB) PYP and or MYP Program
  • Master’s degree holder a plus
