The camaraderie between instructors makes it worthwhile.
The good thingsBeing part of a group of like-minded instructors in a high-caliber institution is a great feeling, and makes the hardships worth it.
The challengesThe standards for renewal might be too high for some.

    Lots of unrealised potential
The good thingsFriendly coworkers, nice campus. Facilities are sufficient.
The challengesGetting paid takes a long while if you are contractual. Your expectations of students in light of the status of the University can be an unpleasant surprise. Friendliness of colleagues can be better translated into support for professional and career development.

Teaching, research, and extension - for the nation.
The good thingsEverybody wants you to succeed as your efforts should ultimately go back to the nation. There is also a bountiful resource of knowledge and experience found not only in the libraries but in the guidance of the senior faculty members. Apart from being at the forefront of learning advanced subjects in research, the sheer joy of seeing students succeed is also one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. This is especially true for a university where the brightest of potentials gather.
The challengesBeing an academician, you need to find the balance between teaching, research, and doing various extension works. This could be difficult sometimes. And of course, just like any workplace, you need to be adept at dealing with various kinds of people, especially towards different kinds of students with different kinds of needs and towards your co-faculty and staff. A deep love for the academe would sustain you for a long time, but remember that this must be coupled with proper work towards what you love.

Handling of salaries sours entire working relationship
The good thingsThe professorial body is par excellence and is accommodating and friendly. The current facilities are average but is expected to improve due to university infrastructure programs. The students are cream of the crop and are easy to teach. Overall, except for the college administration and building maintenance, everything is top notch.
The challengesSalaries are always delayed, up to 3 months and regularly by 1 month. No positive response from the administration on any solution from their end to find a way to have salaries come in on time; or to proactively engage with the University Cashiers Office and other relevant departments to find a work around or permanent solution for this problem.

Lots of opportunity to learn from experts from the field of social development
The good thingsFlexible working hours Location is near my house Very easy to reach by public transportation Well-known academic and research institution Liberal and progressive Women-friendly spaces Promotes gender and development PWD and Senior Citizen friendly Good mentors Family-like working environment Plenty of vacations Plenty of opportunities for staff development Will allow employees to get grants from foreign institutions and attend trainings and conferences outside of the country without deducting your salary
The challengesPromotion is hard to come by since it's a government institution Salary increase is very minimal Multitasking is a daily occurrence and it can impede your own work progress Seniority is valued but sometimes taken advantage of

    Working in UP
The good thingsThe opportunity to travel all over the country for free. We are tasked to do sampling work in provinces such as Bohol, Davao, Cebu, Palawan, Zamboanga, Gensan, etc. After sampling, we are allowed to visit tourist spots and explore e province. All expenses are paid. The chance to work in a scientific laboratory which taught me how to coordinate with others and how to work systematically.
The challengesProject-based employees should be treated equally as regular university employers by giving us benefits such as SSS/GSIS, Philhealth, and the like. Working conditions will definitely improve if the university decides to take good care of ALL of its employees.

    The UP Instructor...
The good things*Not a typical 8-5 job *You get to decide your schedule *You're with wonderful company (co-faculty, students) *Learning does not stop. *There are many opportunities for development *You're in a wonderful work environment - you're in the city but you are in the midst of trees, green grass and clear blue skies *You will fall in love with the library
The challenges*The salary is not comparable to what you will get in a corporate job *Time management can be difficult *Crime reports in Quezon City and in the campus in general can be a bit scary *The commute can be quite a hassle - especially when it rains *Some classrooms are still not airconditioned and this is a challenge during the hot summer days *Getting your HR papers processed is a hassle
