Experienced TIG / MIG Welder – Welshpool
Bossong Engineering is a modern, technology-driven engineering company servicing the mining, oil & gas, construction and heavy industry sectors across Australia.
We are seeking an experienced TIG / MIG Welder for our Welshpool workshop in a full-time position, with regular overtime available.
This role offers an approximate 50/50 split of GTAW (TIG) and GMAW/FCAW (MIG) welding. Strong skills across both processes are required, with high-quality TIG welding essential.
The Role
You will be involved in the fabrication and welding of:
Mining, oil & gas and heavy industrial components
Pipework, spools and pressure components
Structural assemblies, chutes, tanks and skids
Carbon steel, stainless steel, quenched & tempered and alloy steels
Work includes:
GTAW/TIG pipe and positional welding, plus GMAW and FCAW welding
Setting up argon purge systems and pipe rotators/positioners
Joint preparation, fit-up, alignment and fabrication
Reading drawings, weld symbols and welding procedure specifications (WPSs)
Selecting welding parameters and controlling heat input and interpass temperatures
Grinding, cleaning, finishing and inspecting work for weld quality
Experience with AS 1554 SP, AS 3992, ASME IX and AWS D1.1 will be highly regarded
Weld Test
Successful applicants must complete a practical GTAW/TIG weld test on 316 stainless steel pipe, demonstrating:
Independent pipe preparation, fit-up and TIG machine setup
Independent argon purge-line setup and effective purge control
Correct setup and operation of a pipe rotator
A high-quality TIG root and completed weld, with acceptable internal and external finish
Sound control of welding parameters, heat input and interpass temperatures
The test is completed with minimal supervision and assesses TIG capability; day-to-day work remains approximately 50/50 TIG and MIG/FCAW.
About You
To be successful in this role you will have:
Strong TIG (GTAW) and MIG/FCAW (GMAW/FCAW) welding skills
Experience welding carbon and stainless steels, particularly pipework
Ability to set up purge systems and pipe rotators independently
Good fabrication, fit-up, joint preparation and weld-cleanliness practices
Ability to interpret drawings, weld symbols and WPS requirements
Excellent workmanship, reliability and a commitment to safety and quality
Ability to work effectively within a workshop team
Experience with alloy or quenched & tempered steels, mining or oil & gas fabrication, and pressure piping is advantageous. Current welding qualifications are valued, but demonstrated ability and passing our weld test are essential. Evidence of Australian working rights is required before testing.
