A paralegal is a legal professional who assists lawyers with legal work but is not licensed to practice law independently. Paralegals play an important role in law firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

Job Description of a Paralegal

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Conducting legal research using statutes, regulations, and case law

  • Drafting legal documents such as contracts, pleadings, affidavits, and correspondence

  • Organizing and maintaining case files and legal records

  • Assisting lawyers in preparing for trials, hearings, mediations, and depositions

  • Interviewing clients and witnesses to gather information

  • Reviewing and summarizing documents and evidence

  • Filing legal documents with courts and government agencies

  • Monitoring deadlines and managing legal calendars

  • Assisting with compliance and regulatory matters

  • Communicating with clients, courts, and other parties under attorney supervision

Qualifications of a Paralegal

Educational Requirements

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree (requirements vary by employer and country)

  • Certificate or diploma in paralegal studies is often preferred

  • Knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, and documentation
