A change of plans
from JobStreet.com

Changing careers is one of the more recent phenomena in the workplace. For some, it is the answer to the economic realities of today. Few opportunities in one field may force one to look at prospects in more lucrative areas. For others, it is the chance to reverse a work life they are unhappy with. Technology, distance learning and short-term courses offer the means to acquire new skills in ways not possible before. But a career change is a major move, something that can’t be decided overnight or on an impulse. Here, 10 questions you need to ask yourself before making that leap:

  1. Do I really want to switch careers? Study your situation and options. Perhaps you are not happy where you are because you don’t see eye to eye with the boss. If so, a lateral move to another department where you are a better fit may be called for. Or you might actually dislike your particular area of responsibility. Then consider requesting a different set of tasks. For instance, you could request to do sales fieldwork if telemarketing bores you to tears.

  2. Do you know what you want? You need to analyze yourself-who you are, what you enjoy doing, what your goals and aspirations are. At the same time, take note of your strengths and weaknesses as well as your skills, experiences and qualifications.

  3. Do you have a career in mind? Now, you need to choose the career that’s right for you. Read and research trade magazines, news articles and career websites about fields that hold your interest until you zero in on your target occupation.

  4. Can you transfer those skills? Some skills come in handy whatever industry you’re in. Hard skills like computer know-how and soft skills such as communication abilities will never become obsolete. You’re a practical businesswoman aspiring to become a writer? Trade publications have room for those who know the industry inside out. All this, however, may not be enough and you may need to take up further studies to achieve your future goals.

  5. Are you willing to take a pay cut or start from scratch? More than likely, you will be offered an entry-level job to match your level of experience and skills in a new field. In fact, you might even have to content yourself with volunteer or temporary work initially just to gain a foothold in the industry. On the positive side, this can actually be a better way to find out more about the industry without totally going out on a limb.

These are some of the things you must consider when making a career change. What’s important to remember is that though it may take awhile, the odds of career change success are greater now than ever before.
