Earn while you learn
from JobStreet.com

Grappling with high tuition? One way to cope-other than badgering your poor parents-is to take the part-time job route.

In addition to having money to cover tuition and personal expenses, being a working student provides you other benefits, such as:

  • The work experience and contacts to help you in your job search after graduation. In fact, some companies hire part-time working students as regular employees later on for showing excellent performance.

  • Useful skills including discipline, communication, teamwork, time management, decision making, customer service and other positive work habits.

  • Clues as to the kind of work you’d like to specialize in after graduation.

  • An opportunity to apply in the real world the principles and techniques you’ve learned in the classroom.

But not everyone can take on part-time work. You need to be physically fit and mentally prepared to take on this task. And before looking for a part-time job, ask yourself these questions:

  • What are my interests, values and skills?
  • What is my main reason for wanting a part-time job?
  • How many hours and days can I allot to my work?
  • How much do I need to earn?
If you feel you can pull it off, it’s time to put your plans in motion. Here’s where to look:
  1. Your university’s career center. It will often have a listing of employers looking for student workers.
  2. Your school’s bulletin boards, where hiring managers often post their ads.
  3. Campus job fairs. Don’t forget to bring your resume with you.
  4. The classifieds of newspapers.
  5. Online job sites like JobStreet.com.
  6. Your contacts. Network with friends, neighbors, relatives, teachers, advisors for leads on where to find temporary work.
Other tips for working part-time
  1. Choose a job that is flexible and that will fit around your school schedule.
  2. Choose a job that relates to your field of study.

There is a healthy range of available jobs for student part-timers. They ran the gamut from on-campus openings ranging from clerical and technical to research and manual. You’ll also have opportunities to try off-campus, especially in local stores, restaurants and fast-food chains, and in other service-oriented businesses. Good luck!
